About Mark:
Mark Woodford is a Past Chair and Professor in the Department of Counselor Education at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in fine arts and anthropology and his Master’s degree in agency counseling from The College of William and Mary, and his Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision from the University of Virginia.
Dr. Woodford is a licensed professional counselor and a master addiction counselor who has worked in community-, family-, and school-based prevention and early intervention programs, as well as in an all-male residential addiction treatment facility. In addition to his duties as the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Coordinator at TCNJ, he teaches graduate-level courses in treating addiction and co-occurring disorders, group counseling, and counseling boys and men, as well as provides clinical supervision for graduate students in counselor education.
Dr. Woodford’s research interests are in the field addiction counseling with an emphasis on the interplay of gender issues in the treatment of addiction and co-occurring disorders. This area of interest is an outgrowth of his prior clinical work with boys and men juxtaposed with his training at the University of Virginia (UVA) where he had the good fortune of being the first male staff member for The Women’s Center at UVA. As the Clinical Supervisor and Counseling Services Coordinator, he worked solely with women in an environment where the importance of understanding the role of gender socialization was paramount. He is the author of “Men, Addiction, and Intimacy: Strengthening Recovery by Fostering the Emotional Development of Boys and Men” (2012).
