Philip Trompetter, PhD, ABPP

Dr. Philip Trompetter is a California-licensed clinical psychologist who has had a specialty practice in police and forensic psychology for more than forty years. He is board-certified with the American Board of Police and Public Safety Psychology (ABPPSP) through the American Board of Professional Psychology, and was president of the ABPPSP board in 2016-2017. His police psychology practice has included confidential counseling to officers and their families, pre-employment psychological evaluations of police applicants and psychological fitness-for-duty evaluations of incumbent officers, and field consultation to five SWAT/Crisis Negotiation Teams, responding to 150+ emergency callouts for barricaded/hostage incidents. He has conducted hundreds of critical incident interventions following officer-involved shootings, and regularly testifies in criminal and civil trials regarding human factors in police deadly force confrontations. He trains officers in de-escalation techniques, has conducted workshops for the American Academy of Police and Public Safety Psychology, has authored several journal articles in the specialty, and wrote a chapter on the history of police psychology in an edited book about police psychology.
