988 is the new national number designated for mental health and suicidal crises. When mental healthcare providers and therapists finish their day shifts, there is an entire community behind the scenes dedicated to supporting individuals who need after-hours care. In mid-July of 2022, 988 will be accessible to the nation as an alternative crisis support system to the traditional 911 phone number.

The three-digit phone number, 988, serves a specific purpose with the intention of minimizing the overuse of emergency department resources, lessening involuntary hospitalizations, and reducing the number of individuals with mental illness in jail.

To understand how to use the new number, learn more about distinguishing what mental health and suicidal crises look like in communities. Certain situations such as violent behavior, brandishing a weapon, actively harming oneself, or harming others are reasons to contact 911 immediately.
