This on-demand professional training program on Developmental Issues is presented by Stephen D. Hart, PhD, in partnership with Protect International Risk and Safety Services.

When assessing violence risk in adolescents and young adults, it is tempting to use tools developed for use with adults and make some minor modifications—the so-called “downward extension” approach. But best practice is founded on a developmental perspective, one that recognizes the nature, expression, meaning, and management of risk factors for violence changes across the lifespan.

This program discusses developmental principles relevant to violence risk assessment, presents the core elements of a truly developmental perspective on violence risk assessment, and then presents a case study that illustrates how this perspective influences practice at every step of the assessment process, from gathering information to case formulation to the development of management plans.
