Personality disorders account for a substantial portion of the workload of most mental health professionals. However, cognitive biases and assumptions may impact the assessment of personality disorders for ethnic and minority individuals. For example, several research studies have found that mental health professionals of cultural backgrounds different from those of patients being evaluated demonstrate bias in diagnosing borderline personality disorder (BPD).
