Carlos Castañeda and Amanda Pena share insight on Autism and guidance on how current and future mental health practitioners can feel confident, competent, and empathic to their clients who are on the spectrum. They also discuss comorbid symptoms people may experience such as anxiety, depression and trauma along with empirically supported interventions that may benefit people with Autism.

About Carlos and Amanda:

Carlos Castañeda MA, is a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern who practices counseling at the El Paso State Supported Living Center with individuals who are with Autism or Intellectual Developmental Disability. Carlos has been working with individuals on the spectrum for six years as an ABA Therapist and LPC Intern. Carlos is the founder of The Missing Peace Counseling, an organization that provides trainings and consultations on Autism to health professionals and provides insight on how to work with the population in their practice. Carlos aspires to replace the stigma of Autism professionals may have with empathy and care. He also aspires to earn his doctorate in Counseling Education and Supervision and contribute in providing more research in treatment for the Autism community.

Amanda is a Licensed Professional Counselor, in Austin, Texas, with a wealth of experience in applying Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other therapeutic tools benefiting the needs of persons with Asperger Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD and related social communication challenges. Amanda’s understanding of anxiety and emotional regulation and the impact those struggles have on vocational, relational and educational outcomes make her the ideal therapist for persons seeking to control the anxiety and sensory needs that impair their daily activities, ability to work and ability to successfully pursue educational and relational goals. In addition to being Spectrum’s owner, Amanda is the director of Spectrum’s mental health department.
