With the world enjoying the entertainment of the 2022 World Cup, what are the counseling needs of this population? What are their challenges, and how has the counseling world met the needs of athletes under extraordinary pressure to perform?

Dr. Lindsey Portela is a visiting professor and clinical supervisor at Auburn University in their special education, rehabilitation, and counseling department. Her counseling experiences include working at an outpatient addiction center, a college counseling center, a child advocacy center, and most recently private practice. Her experience with athletes is diverse as a division I student-athlete, a graduate assistant for Athletics, and working for an NFL team. Having such an in-depth look at the experiences of athletes and working with high school and college athletes in private practice lead her research focus of exploring the relationship among athletic identity and mental health and well-being as they relate to social media.

Olivia Dedels is a master’s student in clinical mental health counseling currently gaining her clinical experience working with the incarcerated population. She also is a graduate assistant for the athletics department where her program oversees the student athlete experience from recruit to alum. Before graduate school, she grew up playing travel soccer and eventually attended Auburn University for her undergraduate degree and was a starter and captain for the women’s soccer team.
