Program Description

This self-paced training program on Violence Triage is presented by Dr. Stephen Hart.

This course focuses on principles of Violence Triage for prioritizing cases and actions. Skills for triaging violence are important to assist professionals and workplaces in fulfilling their professional obligations under statutory law, common law, and professional codes of ethics to screen for and respond to warning signs related to violence risk. Failure to do so could result in legal liability if actions failed to meet professional standards and resulted in harm to others.

The Violence Triage helps professionals and workplaces to make immediate decisions about receiving and assessing information concerning warning signs for violence risk, develop an action plan for resolution, and meet organizational reporting requirements. By using an evidence-based process to make these decisions, workplaces can protect themselves from potential liability and protecting others from future harm.

The fee for this training program is $250 and includes all materials.

    About Dr. Stephen Hart

     


      
    Dr. Stephen Hart obtained his PhD in clinical psychology at the University of British Columbia in 1993. He currently holds positions as Professor in the Department of Psychology at Simon Fraser University and Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Bergen. His expertise is in the field of clinical-forensic psychology, with a special focus on the assessment of violence risk and psychopathic personality disorder. He has received grants totaling more than CAD $2 million; authored and co-authored more than 180 books, chapters, and articles, and more than 400 conference presentations. His manuals and guidelines on the assessment of violence risk and psychopathic personality disorder have been translated into more than two dozen languages and are used around the world. He was Co-Editor and later Editor of the International Journal of Forensic Mental Health from 2001 to 2011, and in 2012 was appointed Editor of the new Journal of Threat Assessment and Management.
     
    He is a member of the editorial board of five other journals, and an ad hoc reviewer for more than 30 other journals, as well as numerous granting agencies. He was President of the American Psychology-Law Society (Division 41 of the American Psychological Association), and currently is President-Elect of the International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services and a Director of the Canadian Association of Threat Assessment Professionals. He has led more than 350 training workshops for mental health, law enforcement, corrections, and legal professionals in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australasia. He has been qualified to give expert testimony regarding risk assessment in the superior courts of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Ontario in Canada; in the superior courts of Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin in the United States; and before parliamentary committees in Canada and Scotland. He has received various distinctions for his professional work, including the Career Achievement Award from the Society of Clinical Psychology (Division 12 of the American Psychological Association), the Saleem Shah Award for Early Career Research Excellence in Psychology and Law from the American Psychology-Law Society (Division 41 of the American Psychological Association) and the American Academy of Forensic Psychology, and the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals.

    Continuing Education Credit

    This Distance Learning Course is a Home Study Training Program. To earn CEs you are required to complete all course materials, quizzes, and the evaluation. No partial credit is available. A score of 70% is required to proceed; you will be able to re-take any quiz on which you score less than 70%. Participants will earn 10 CE hours upon completion of these requirements. Each participant will be able to download and print the CE certificate upon completion of the final evaluation.
