CE (CEU) Hours: 50

Program Description

The relationship between psychopathic traits and risk for violence has been well established and the assessment of psychopathic personality is a critical component of any risk assessment. This training sequence will provide you both with didactic training on the assessment of psychopathy as well as the opportunity to apply these assessment skills to real case studies. The Foundations of Psychopathy training program provides the foundational background you need to understand the construct of psychopathy, how it differs from the DSM-5 conceptualization of Antisocial Personality Disorder, and how it can be measured using the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCl-R) and the Psychopathy Checklist: Screening Version (PCL:SR). In addition to a review of the relevant empirical evidence regarding psychopathy and its measurement, the Master Class in Psychopathy provides you with the opportunity to apply psychopathy assessment skills to four detailed case studies. Here you will work through each of four cases, with the opportunity to score the PCL-R and PCL:SV for each, and to learn how psychopathic personality characteristics should be included in a formulation of an individual’s future risk. Gold standard ratings for each of the cases are provided as is a discussion of the scoring for each case.

Why take the Psychopathy Training Series?
This training sequence will provide you with:
(1) The empirical and theoretical foundations for the assessment of psychopathy
(2) Didactic training on psychopathic personality assessment using the PCL-R and PCL:SV
(3) The empirical and theoretical foundations for formulating risk, taking into consideration the level of psychopathic personality traits
(4) The opportunity to work through 4 case studies, score the PCL-R and PCL:SV for each, and make comparisons with gold standard ratings
(5) The opportunity to observe discussions regarding how the PCL-R and PCL:SV are to be scored and how this information fits into the formulation of an individual’s risk

Training In Assessing Psychopathy using the Hare Scales PCL-R and PCL:SV

Psychopathic personality disorder is an important risk factor for violence. Additionally, it has relevance for treatment and risk management. The Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R) is currently the best validated measure of psychopathy. The use of the PCL-R has become widespread across many agencies; it provides a standard methodology for assessing this important risk factor. In particular, emphasis is given to the clinical information derived from the instrument and how that information can be used in risk violence formulation. PCL-R PCL-SV Hare Psychopathy Checklist Revised Master Course Training

The ability to assess psychopathic personality disorder (PPD) is an important requirement for clinical and forensic mental health professionals working in many settings. The Hare PCL-R and PCL:SV are widely regarded as the gold standard for assessing PPD, yet it is clear from experience in the field and recent research that these tools are not simple or easy to use. This course is designed to give practitioners the opportunity to develop and demonstrate a high level of expertise in the use of the PCL-R and PCL:SV.Participants will begin by learning principles of administration and interpretation, then building related skills by completing and reviewing case studies. Next, participants will develop the most effective ways to communicate their findings, both in writing and orally. For more information about this training click the icon.
