Program Description

This live training on Preparing for Board Certification in Police & Public Safety Psychology is presented by Jeni McCutcheon, PsyD, ABPP & Gary Fischler, PhD, ABPP.

Psychologists who practice in police and public safety psychology (PPSP) often choose to have their competence recognized through board certification by the American Board of Police and Public Safety Psychology (ABPPSP), one of the 15 specialty boards of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).  This workshop is presented by the current National Chair of Examinations (NCE) and his immediate predecessor, and will describe the distinctive PPSP knowledge areas, including cultural competence; ethical, legal and practice standards; essential PPSP functions; and the unique aspects of police and public safety personnel and organizations. It will describe the benchmarks and foundational PPSP competencies necessary to practice in its four primary domains: assessment, clinical intervention, operational support, and organizational consultation.  The workshop will provide a step-by-step guide on how to apply for board certification, including preparing the Practice Sample, choosing work samples, and technical submission requirements. An overview of the board certification process, including submitting the initial application, submitting the Practice Sample, obtaining feedback from the Practice Sample Review Committee, and the Oral Examination process, will be provided. This workshop will help participants create and implement a plan to obtain the knowledge and experience needed to apply for board certification, to experience the benefits of board certification, to succeed in the application and examination process, and to identify helpful resources.

About the Presenters

Jeni McCutcheon, Psy.D., M.S.C.P., ABPP is a licensed psychologist in Arizona and Washington and board-certified in Police and Public Safety Psychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology. She has worked continuously in the field of police and public safety psychology for the last 21 years. In multiple settings, within agency and in independent practice, she has formed teams and systems for psychological service provision in this psychology specialization area. Services provided include pre-employment evaluations, officer involved shooting, use of force and other post-critical incident services, psychotherapy services to personnel and their family, teaching and training, consultation services, and CISM/Peer Support Team selection, development and management services. She has authored multiple chapters on ethics in police and public safety psychology. She is the immediate past President of the American Board of Police and Public Safety Psychology and a former Chair of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Police Psychological Services Section. She taught graduate level classes, in ethics and other areas, at Northern Arizona University for a decade. She is a past chair of the Ethics Consultation Committee for the Arizona Psychological Association and the Ethics Consultation Committee for the Police Psychological Services Section of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Dr. Gary L. Fischler earned a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1984 and is a licensed psychologist in Minnesota and Wisconsin. He is a Board Certified Specialist of the American Board of Police and Public Safety Psychology (ABPPSP) and a member of its Board of Directors, serving as its National Chair of Examinations. He is a past General Chair of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Police Psychology Services Section (PPSS). He is an adjunct assistant professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota and has served as the chair of the University of Minnesota Press Advisory Board, Test Division. He is a past chair of the IACP PPSS Education Committee, Fitness-For-Duty Guidelines Committee, and Ethics Consultation Committee. He is a past chair of the Ethics Committee of the Minnesota Psychological Association and has served as a court-appointed psychological examiner in Hennepin County since 1995. Dr. Fischler’s special interests relate to the interface between psychological functioning, legal issues, and workplace concerns, and he has authored or co-authored several publications on these topics.

The workshop begins promptly at 8:30am Pacific and will run until 4:30pm Pacific. We will be breaking for lunch from Noon – 1:00pm Pacific. In addition, we will take two, 15-min breaks at approximately 10:15am and 2:45pm Pacific.

Light refreshments will be provided for morning and afternoon breaks. Lunch is on your own. There are several places to eat within walking distance of the workshop location. If you’d like to bring your lunch, you are welcome to use our fridge and microwave.

This workshop will be video recorded and a camera crew will be on site to capture photos and video footage of Summer Training Institute. In person attendees will be asked to sign a media release, allowing us to use any footage we capture in our development and promotional materials. If you are asked to conduct an interview on camera and do not wish to do so, please simply decline the invitation. If you do not wish to appear on camera at all (as in even in a panned shot of the workshop room), please let us know so we can seat you in a location where you will not be captured on video.

Continuing Education Credit

This is a Live In-Person Training Program. To earn CE’s, you will be required to complete the evaluation for this workshop. No partial credit is available. Participants will earn 7 CE hours for this workshop upon full attendance and completion of the workshop evaluation. Certificates will be sent electronically as PDFs available for download and printing.
