This webinar on Diversity Issues in Violence Risk Assessments: Gender and Sexuality is presented by Dr. Caroline Logan.
In recent years, there has been a call for gender-responsive policies, procedures, and services for assessing and managing risk for violence among women. In general, women are less likely to commit violence than men and may commit violence for different reasons than men. These observations, coupled with the so-called distinction between gender-neutral and gender-responsive risk factors, inspired the development of gender-responsive assessment tools. Questions also have arisen regarding the generalizability of risk assessment procedures for use with non-heterosexual individuals. This webinar provides an overview of the research underlying gender-responsive risk factors, such as trauma history, and discuss ways in which the nature, manifestation, and relevance of key risk and protective factors may differ between genders. Illustrations regarding how to incorporate assessment and management issues relevant to violence risk as a function of gender and sexuality are discussed, with a focus on risk formulation and scenario planning.
This workshop is relevant for mental health professionals who conduct forensic evaluations or who intend to add forensic evaluation to their practice. This workshop is for beginner, intermediate, and advanced level clinicians.
About Dr. Caroline Logan
Caroline Logan is Lead Consultant Forensic Clinical Psychologist in a large NHS forensic mental health service and also an Honorary Research Fellow at University of Manchester in England. Presently, she leads a personality and autism spectrum disorders assessment and liaison team covering the Greater Manchester area, and has developed and runs a number of services for people with personality disorder in prison and probation services, including a prison-based treatment service for women at high risk of serious re-offending due to personality problems. She has worked as a researcher and as a clinician in forensic mental health and criminal justice services for 22 years now, including seven years working as a clinician in such services for women. She also undertakes various consultancy roles with the national health and criminal justice organisations that look after and manage at-risk clients, examining risk assessment and management practice, and proposing and evaluating change.
Dr Logan has served on the editorial board or been associate editor of several journals (International Journal of Forensic Mental Health, Legal and Criminological Psychology, Journal of Forensic Psychiatry and Psychology). She is the co-author of several sets of national practice guidelines (e.g., Understanding Personality Disorder for the British Psychological Society 2006; Best Practice in Managing Risk for the Department of Health 2007 and 2009; Working with Personality Disordered Offenders for the National Offender Management Service/Department of Health 2015). She is Past President of the International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services (2006-2008), and a past board member of the Scottish Risk Management Authority (2004-2008) and remains attached to the latter organisation in a consultancy role. Dr Logan has also served on a number of Home Office/Ministry of Justice committees on criminal justice issues. Presently, she is Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the 5th Bergen International Conference on Forensic Psychiatry (www.bergenconference.no).
Dr Logan has on-going research interests in the areas of personality disorder, including psychopathy, and risk and she has a special interest in gender issues in offending behaviour. She has published two books and over 50 articles on all these subjects. She is currently working on a book on forensic clinical interviewing and a special issue of the International Journal of Forensic Mental Health on the same subject.
