“The Little Leaf” (sung in Yiddish) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfRPX9sNFmA
“The Little Leaf”- English Translation:
A branch rests in the middle of a path, with leaves outstretched
And a little leaf is dropped from the branch and falls off
A righteous man walks along the path and asks the little leaf,
“Why did you drop from the branch and now lie on the path?”
The little leaf answered, “I don’t know how I’m not The Keeper
My branch suddenly dropped me off, and I blew away.”
Branch, branch, The Keeper-
Perhaps you can tell me why you suddenly shook the branch
And dropped off the little leaf?
The branch said, “I don’t know how I’m not The Keeper
The wind suddenly blew, and dropped the little leaf off.”
Wind, wind, The Keeper-
Perhaps you can tell me why you suddenly released the wind
And the little leaf blew off?
The wind said, “I don’t know how I’m not The Keeper
My Angel released me, and I blew the little leaf off!”
Angel, dear Angel, and The Keeper-
Perhaps you can tell me why you released the wind
And it blew?
The Angel said, “I don’t know, I’m not The Keeper
The Creator of the world commanded me to do so.”
Awesome Creator and The Keeper-
Perhaps you can tell me why a little leaf detached from the branch
And fell off the tree?
And the Creator alone Helped the righteous man understand
Hold the little leaf in your hand and take a good look at it
A small worm lay there, all alone
And looked at the Creator, saying, “ I cannot withstand the heat.”
So, I quickly told the Angel to release the wind
Who told the branch to shake
And the little leaf fell off
Then the little leaf shielded the worm from the heat
And the little worm slept soundly and sweet.
