The live professional training program on Using Third-Wave Cognitive Behavioral Therapies as an Adjunct to Forensic Treatment is presented by Mollimichelle Cabeldue, PhD and Lyndsay Brooks, PsyD.

Third-wave cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT) including Mindfulness-Based CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, represent an extension of traditional CBT and place an emphasis on process over content, personal values, mindfulness and acceptance. As there has been an increasing movement toward using evidence-based practices in treatment, these modalities reflect new approaches, which can be utilized in various settings. Forensic populations, including pretrial defendants undergoing competency restoration and not guilty by reason of insanity acquittees hospitalized for risk of dangerousness, have long needed evidence-based treatments to address clinical needs including impulsivity, aggression, psychosis, and emotion dysregulation.

This workshop will review the various ways in which third wave approaches can be used as an adjunct to forensic treatment, with appropriate adaptations. Case examples will be used to illustrate ways in which patients may benefit from each of the discussed modalities. Research highlighting how these modalities can be utilized to decrease clinician burnout will also be discussed.
